Lock Replacement & Upgrade: preparing for the visit

Locksmith · Toronto, Ontario

Technician holding a three-button key fob at a workbench with a tablet, two spare fobs, a notebook and a pegboard behind.

The lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.

Worth answering before the call

Do you own the home, or rent it with the landlord's agreement to change locks? Is there glass in or beside the door? Are you interested in a keypad or smart lock on any door?

Can a lever replace a knob on the same door?

Yes, and it is a common change for anyone who finds a knob hard to grip. Levers use the same bore and backset as knobs, so the swap is usually a direct fit. Levers are handed, so the locksmith checks which way the door swings and chooses or adjusts the lever accordingly. A keyed entry lever pairs well with a deadbolt above it, and interior passage and privacy levers complete the set.

Can you replace the lock on a sliding patio door or French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade.
