Broken Key Extraction
In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door.
In plain words
Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder. The blade gives before the ice does. A winter extraction visit therefore begins with thawing: lock de-icer or gentle warmth frees the plug, then the fragment is drawn out and the cylinder is dried and given the lubricant its maker specifies. You leave with the piece out, a new key cut, and a small tube of de-icer so the next frozen morning is a pause rather than a snap.
How the visit goesYou were locking up on the way out when the key broke in the lock. Now the door is unlocked, a piece of key is jammed in the cylinder, and you were already running late for work.
Broken Key Extraction
How the visit goes

Locked or unlocked right now
Whether the bolt is thrown changes the order of work. If the door is locked, extraction is the first half and getting you inside is the second; the locksmith plans both so the door is opened with the least fuss once the keyway is clear. If the key broke while you were locking up and the door is open, the priority reverses: the fragment comes out and the door is made secure before anything else is discussed, so you can leave when you need to. On a vehicle the same question applies to the door and, separately, to whether the ignition turns.
Taking the cylinder apart to free it
Occasionally a piece is too deep, glued in, or wedged past the pins where no extractor can reach. On a serviceable, removable cylinder, the lock is serviced from behind: removed from the door or padlock (a rekeyable padlock is normally unlocked first), its cap or retaining clip taken off, and a plug follower used to push the plug out while the top pins and springs stay in place. With the plug in hand the fragment is tapped out from the rear, the pins inspected, and everything cleaned before reassembly. Where the cylinder is non-rekeyable, damaged or will not free this way, a replacement cylinder is the alternative, explained first.
Habits for the freezing months
A winter break leaves you with a dried, lubricated cylinder and one rule: when the key stops partway, you stop too. Carry a small lock de-icer in a coat pocket or the glovebox; a few seconds of it, or the warmth of a cupped hand on the cylinder, frees a frozen plug without asking anything of the blade. Shut the storm door before freezing rain, and fit a keyhole cover on a side door that catches meltwater during a thaw. Ice is one of the winter causes the locksmith sees often, alongside worn keys, misalignment and dirty or worn cylinders, and it is one of the easiest to prevent.

Broken Key Extraction
What affects the quote
Rekeying other doors to match
If the cylinder ends up rekeyed or replaced, matching the other exterior locks to the new key is priced per cylinder, and simplest while the locksmith is already there.
Door or strike adjustment
When the key broke because the bolt was binding in a swollen or sagging door, correcting hinges, strike or weatherstrip is offered and quoted as its own item.
Where the key broke
A house deadbolt, a knob, an older mortise case, a padlock, a car door and a vehicle ignition each call for different access and different care, and the quote follows the hardware.
What to have ready
- Is any part of the key still visible above the face of the lock?
- Was the lock frozen or the door swollen when it happened?
- Is the door or vehicle locked or unlocked right now?
Broken Key Extraction: questions
QuestionsWhat proof do I need to show?
Photo identification and something that connects you to the lock. For a house or apartment that is a lease, a bill, addressed post, or confirmation from the property manager; for a business, your role there; for a vehicle, the registration or ownership papers with matching identification. If the documents are inside, say so on the phone and the check is completed once the door is open.
How long does the extraction usually take?
It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look.
Part of the key is sticking out. Can I just pull it with pliers?
If a good length shows and the plug is at its normal rest position, a firm straight pull sometimes works. The risk is pushing instead of pulling, or twisting, which drives the piece deeper and can bend a pin. If it does not come on the first gentle try, stop there and leave it for extractor tools, which grip the cuts without loading the cylinder.
